Severe storms Monday night left one person dead and thousands without power in West Michigan. One person was killed near Cedar Springs after a tree fell on them. The storms also left widespread power outages. Consumers Energy says some of the biggest outages may not be restored until later today.
Hoffman Marine, which owns Shepler's Mackinaw Island Ferry and the Mackinaw Island City Council, disagrees over who determines the rates for ferry passengers. The current rates expire in 2027. Negotiations have been underway since March of last year. But according to various media reports, Hoffman Marine sent the City Council a letter saying it would cease all ferry service to the island when the franchise agreements expire in 2027. A district judge issued a ruling urging both sides to reach an agreement outside of court.
