Mid-Michigan Morning Update: Peace Talks, New Flu Vaccine, Housing Relief & Tigers Win

The first round of high-level negotiations in Switzerland aimed at ending the conflict between the United States and Iran has wrapped up. While a permanent peace agreement remains elusive, both countries have agreed to create a deconfliction cell focused on reducing tensions and addressing fighting in Lebanon.

However, questions remain about whether the agreement will be enough to ease ongoing hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel. Lower-level talks are expected to continue throughout the week.

Meanwhile, a new type of flu vaccine is one step closer to becoming available in the United States. Federal health advisors have recommended approval of the first flu shot made using the same mRNA technology that played a major role in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

The vaccine, developed by Moderna and called Flusiva, is being reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration. If approved, it could be available to older Americans ahead of this winter's flu season, with a final FDA decision expected by early August.

Here in Michigan, the State Senate has passed a package of bills designed to give homeowners a break on housing costs. The legislation, introduced by State Senator Jeff Irwin, would create a new tax credit that works alongside existing incentives to help ease the financial burden of homeownership.

Supporters say the bills are part of a broader effort to address Michigan's ongoing housing shortage. The package now heads to the Republican-controlled House for consideration.

In Midland, there's something new to explore at Dow Gardens. The gardens officially opened their new Welcome Center, featuring expanded event space and a design that blends indoor and outdoor experiences. Visitors can also look forward to a brand-new café opening in July.

Dow Gardens attracts more than 200,000 visitors each year and remains one of Mid-Michigan's favorite destinations.
