What's Trending in Mid-Michigan

Michigan's Favorite Pop Probably Won't Surprise You

What’s the one drink that always seems to find its way into your grocery cart? According to new Instacart data, the answer depends quite a bit on where you live.

Instacart looked at soda orders across the country to determine the most popular pop in each state. And one brand absolutely dominated the map.

Dr Pepper came out on top in 17 states, including Texas, Tennessee, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma and Virginia.

But here in Michigan? We’re keeping it local.

Vernors is Michigan’s most popular soda order.

That probably won’t shock many Michiganders. The Detroit-born ginger ale has been around since the 1800s and has long been a Michigan favorite. It also continues a strange trend in the data: America apparently drinks a LOT of ginger ale.

Canada Dry Ginger Ale is the top choice in several states, including Maine, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, while Schweppes Ginger Ale takes the crown in New York.

Mountain Dew also has a strong following, finishing #1 in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, South Carolina and Wisconsin. Diet Mountain Dew takes the top spot in both Dakotas, Minnesota and Nebraska.

And what about the two giants, Coke and Pepsi?

Classic Coca-Cola is surprisingly #1 in only three states: Florida, Georgia and Louisiana. Diet Coke leads Massachusetts, Utah, Illinois and Washington, while Coke Zero takes California and Hawaii.

Pepsi manages just one state, Delaware, while Diet Pepsi is the favorite in Iowa and Oregon.

North Carolina marches to its own citrusy beat with Sun Drop as its favorite.

And poor Fanta Orange? Not a single state put it at #1.

So Michigan, apparently we can disagree about plenty of things, but when somebody asks what kind of pop we want, there’s a pretty good chance the answer is Vernors.
