There are two reasons to wear a Hawaiian shirt: You want to radiate an “Aloha” vibe... or you're hoping to confuse a robot.

A German designer has created a colorful summer shirt that looks like a very futuristic version of a Hawaiian shirt. It's covered in bright, abstract shapes that are designed to confuse AI-powered surveillance cameras.

The concept is being called “Digital Camouflage.”

Instead of the traditional palm trees, flowers and tropical patterns, this shirt features a collection of seemingly random shapes and colors.

And apparently, that's the point.

The designer says AI surveillance systems don't actually understand what a human is. They learn what humans typically look like from massive amounts of training data. The unusual pattern is designed to interfere with that recognition process.

So while you might look like you're heading to a backyard luau, a camera could potentially have a harder time figuring out exactly what it's looking at.

There's just one funny problem.

The shirt itself was designed with help from AI.

And AI is constantly learning.

That means if the technology really does confuse some cameras, there's a good chance the cameras will eventually learn the trick.

So don't expect this to become the fashion world's first invisibility cloak.

For now, though, it does raise an interesting question:

Would you actually wear a shirt designed to confuse AI cameras?

Or would you rather just wear the loudest Hawaiian shirt you can find and tell everyone you're on vacation?

Either way, you might want to leave the sunglasses and giant inflatable flamingo at home. The shirt is already doing enough.
