Canada’s New Tariffs on U.S. Goods Take Effect
Canada has officially imposed retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, with the new duties taking effect just after midnight.
The tariffs cover about $20 billion worth of American products, with duties ranging from 15% to 50%. The affected products include everything from steel and furniture to clothing and electronics.
The move follows the collapse of negotiations last month, intensifying an already 18-month-old trade war between the two countries.
Saginaw ISD Employees Getting Big Raises
Employees of the Saginaw Intermediate School District are getting a significant pay increase under a new three-year collective bargaining agreement.
The agreement provides salary increases averaging 18% and was ratified by the Saginaw Intermediate Federation of Teachers before being approved by the Saginaw ISD Board of Education.
School officials say the investment will help Saginaw ISD remain competitive with comparable intermediate school districts throughout Michigan and the region.
Thousands Take Part in Mackinac Bridge Walk
The annual Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk drew approximately 34,000 participants Monday.
According to the Mackinac Bridge Authority, traffic was closed on the bridge at 6:30 Monday morning and reopened at noon.
Attendance in recent years has ranged from about 21,000 to 35,000 people, making this year's turnout one of the larger crowds in recent years.
Tigers Win, Loons Begin Postseason
The Detroit Tigers picked up a 5-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins.
Meanwhile, postseason baseball gets underway tonight for the Great Lakes Loons, who host the Dayton Dragons in Game One of their Division Series.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 tonight.
