Just when you thought the canned-meat industry had finally run out of ideas, SPAM has come up with another one.
Hot Honey-flavored SPAM is hitting grocery store shelves, and unlike some of the questionable things you find lurking in the back of your grandma's pantry, this one is apparently here to stay. It's a permanent flavor.
The makers of SPAM describe it as a sweet-and-spicy twist on the classic canned meat.
And if you're thinking, "Wait... SPAM wasn't spicy enough already?" apparently there are people out there demanding more.
They're even pushing SPAM into the breakfast game.
There are recipes for a Hot Honey SPAM breakfast sandwich and Hot Honey SPAM waffles with apple-jalapeño slaw.
Because nothing says Michigan Saturday morning quite like waking up, looking outside at 48 degrees and cloudy skies, and thinking:
"You know what would really hit the spot? A waffle with canned pork and jalapeño slaw."
And before you judge, SPAM has gotten surprisingly adventurous.
There are roughly 15 varieties, including Korean BBQ, Gochujang, Japanese BBQ, Bacon, Maple, Hickory Smoke, Teriyaki and Jalapeño.
Maple SPAM is particularly interesting in Michigan.
We're the state that puts maple syrup on pancakes, so I suppose we were eventually going to arrive at the intersection of breakfast and canned meat.
Although if you're going to eat Hot Honey SPAM, I'm thinking the proper Michigan serving method is simple:
Put it on a plate.
Stand outside.
Eat it while arguing about whether it's going to snow next weekend.
Then tell everybody you got the recipe from your cousin in Bay City.
And remember, SPAM says the Hot Honey variety is permanent.
So apparently this is our life now.
