Halloween is almost here, and if you've been to the grocery store lately, you already know candy isn't exactly getting cheaper. But are things getting so bad that trick-or-treaters in Michigan might have to settle for one lonely gummy bear?
Apparently, that's a thing!
A woman named Danielle is going viral on TikTok after discovering what she calls a possible "recession indicator" while going through her son's Halloween candy from a trunk-or-treat event over the weekend.
And what did she find?
Not a full-size candy bar. Not a handful of mini Snickers. Not even one of those tiny bags of Skittles.
ONE. SINGLE. GUMMY BEAR.
Individually wrapped in plastic.
That's it. That's the whole candy haul.
And before you ask, no, it wasn't a cannabis gummy. Just one regular little gummy bear, apparently living its best life inside a plastic wrapper.
Is This Halloween in Michigan or Trick-or-Treating on a Budget?
Danielle's video has racked up more than 325,000 views and 38,000 likes, with plenty of people laughing over the discovery.
But she was quick to explain that her son wasn't disappointed. In fact, he was thrilled!
His favorite stuffed animal is a bear-shaped plush called Blue Bear. Since the tiny candy reminded him of his beloved stuffed animal, he thought it was pretty exciting.
Honestly, that's a wholesome Halloween moment right there. Mom sees an economic crisis. Kid sees a tiny candy version of his best friend.
Meanwhile, somewhere in Michigan, a parent is probably looking at the price of a bag of Halloween candy and thinking, "Maybe I should start handing out individual chocolate chips."
Michigan Trick-or-Treaters, Prepare Yourselves!
Imagine walking around Saginaw, Bay City, Midland or Flint on Halloween night, braving the cold Michigan air, dodging wet leaves on the sidewalk, and knocking on 25 doors.
You get home, dump your candy on the living room floor, and discover that one house gave you a single gummy bear.
Not a bag of gummy bears. One gummy bear.
You'd have to inspect it like a diamond before deciding whether it was worth the walk.
And what happens if you get a Swedish Fish at the next house? Are we collecting individual pieces of candy now? Is this Halloween or a scavenger hunt?
Some commenters said they received similar treats, including a single wrapped Swedish Fish and one individually wrapped Sour Patch Kid.
Others shared pictures of individually wrapped candies they'd seen at stores such as Dollar Tree. The practice may be more common than people realize, although it's unclear how widespread it is.
Of course, some people had another concern: all that extra plastic packaging for one tiny piece of candy.
The Great Michigan Candy Debate
Let's be fair. Nobody says you have to hand out king-size candy bars to every kid in the neighborhood. Halloween treats can get expensive, especially if you live on a busy street where the trick-or-treaters arrive by the dozen.
And there's nothing wrong with keeping things affordable.
But there's a difference between handing out a fun little treat and making a kid wonder whether the rest of the candy is still in your house.
Maybe the solution is to buy a bag of mini candy bars, hand out a few pieces at a time, or get creative with inexpensive non-food treats.
Or, if you're really feeling generous, hand out a gummy bear and tell the kids there's a chance its family is hiding at the next house.
We Want to Hear From You!
Michigan, let's settle this.
Would you be happy getting ONE individually wrapped gummy bear while trick-or-treating, or would you be giving that house the side-eye for the rest of the night?
And if you're handing out candy this Halloween, what's your strategy? Full-size candy bars? A handful of minis? Or are you on Team One Gummy Bear?
No judgment. We know everything costs more these days.
But if you see a kid walking away from your house holding one tiny gummy bear, just remember: that kid might be thrilled.
Their parents, however, may be starting an economic investigation.
Happy Halloween, Michigan! May your candy bags be heavy, your costumes stay dry, and your gummy bears come with at least a couple of friends.
