Mid-Michigan News: $152 Million Military Upgrade, New Push to Fight Deed Fraud and Rising Halloween Candy Prices
There’s a major military investment on the way, a new effort to protect Michigan homeowners from property scams, and another reason your Halloween candy bowl might cost a little more this year. Here’s a look at the latest headlines, plus the sports and weather forecast for Mid-Michigan.
$152 Million Investment Planned for Selfridge Air National Guard Base
A $152 million state investment is paving the way for new military missions at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. Officials broke ground Wednesday on infrastructure improvements designed to support the arrival of new fighter jets and refueling aircraft.
The new aircraft are expected to arrive around October or November 2028. The investment will help prepare the base for its expanded role and the equipment needed to support those missions.
Michigan Lawmakers Target Deed Fraud
New legislation introduced in the Michigan House and Senate aims to help homeowners who become victims of deed fraud.
Deed fraud happens when someone files a forged deed to falsely claim ownership of another person's property. Scammers may then attempt to take out loans against the home or sell the property to someone else.
The proposed bills would speed up the process for removing fraudulent deeds from property records and create a fill-in complaint form that homeowners could use without having to hire an attorney just to get the process started.
For Michigan homeowners, the proposal could offer another tool to fight back against scammers who try to turn someone else's house into their own payday.
Halloween Candy Is Getting More Expensive
If you're filling the candy bowl before Halloween, be prepared to spend a little more.
Candy prices are reportedly up an average of 15 percent compared with last year, according to the Century Foundation and an independent think tank cited in the report.
Higher transportation costs are among the factors pushing prices upward. Rising diesel prices make it more expensive to move products from manufacturers to stores, and those added costs can eventually show up at the checkout counter.
So, if you're buying candy for the neighborhood kids, you might want to plan your budget before grabbing those extra-large bags. Around Mid-Michigan, the scariest thing about Halloween this year might be the receipt.
