Mid-Michigan News: Arson Watch Patrols, Halloween Safety Warnings and the Debate Over Changing the Clocks

It's a busy Friday across the country and right here in Mid-Michigan. From political campaign changes to Halloween safety, here are some of the stories making headlines.

Trump and Vance Cancel Campaign Appearances

President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance have canceled several planned appearances across three states during the final days of the midterm campaign.

Trump called off two weekend rallies in Kansas and Iowa. Instead, he'll be holding a series of telephone rallies to reach voters. The changes come as campaigns make their final push ahead of Election Day.

Don't Forget to Turn Those Clocks Back!

Get ready for that extra hour of sleep! Daylight saving time ends early Sunday morning, meaning most of us will turn our clocks back one hour.

A House-approved bill that would make daylight saving time permanent is unlikely to move forward in the Senate before the end of the year.

Supporters say getting rid of the time change would mean more daylight in the afternoon. Opponents argue that permanent daylight saving time could leave some communities dealing with sunrise after 9 a.m. during the winter.

For now, Michigan residents will continue the twice-a-year tradition of changing the clocks. At least this weekend, we get an extra hour!

Saginaw Arson Watch Returns for Halloween Weekend

Saginaw residents will see extra neighborhood patrols tonight and Saturday night as Saginaw Arson Watch works to help protect buildings and properties.

The volunteer effort started in 2006 following a high number of arson fires in previous years.

Residents who aren't able to patrol are being asked to leave their porch and yard lights on throughout the night. It's a simple way to help keep neighborhoods visible and discourage suspicious activity.

Halloween Safety Warning for Drivers and Families

Halloween falling on a Saturday means there could be plenty of activity on the roads, including trick-or-treaters, partygoers and people using electric rides.

AAA is reminding drivers to slow down in residential neighborhoods, avoid distractions and use extra caution after dark.

Parents are encouraged to make costumes easier to see by adding reflective tape and to supervise children younger than 12.

And for drivers, remember: that little ghost crossing the street might not be looking both ways!

Sports

The Green Bay Packers picked up a victory, defeating the Carolina Panthers 27-19.
