U.S. and Iran Exchange New Military Strikes

The conflict between the United States and Iran continues to escalate.

The U.S. launched a new round of airstrikes targeting sites in northwestern Iran after announcing the death of another American service member. The strikes reportedly focused on areas believed to house underground missile facilities.

Iran responded by launching attacks toward Bahrain, home of the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, and Kuwait, further raising tensions across the Middle East.

The renewed conflict is also impacting consumers. Benchmark Brent crude oil climbed above $90 a barrel, helping push the national average price of regular gasoline back to around $4 a gallon.

Tropical System Forms Near Florida

A tropical depression has developed off Florida's west coast and is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Bertha.

Because of hazardous air quality caused by the Canadian wildfire smoke, Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort, along with the Jordan Davis and Tucker Wetmore organizations, has made the decision to cancel the July 17, 2026, concert.

The decision was made to protect the health and safety of fans, artists, and event staff as smoke continues to impact much of Michigan.

A New Date Is Being Worked On

The good news is that all parties are actively working to find a new concert date. Once a rescheduled performance is confirmed, Soaring Eagle will announce it across its official platforms.

What Happens to Your Tickets?

If you already have tickets, hang on to them. They will be honored for the rescheduled show.

If you're unable to attend the new date, refunds are available:

Organizers say the decision wasn't made lightly, but protecting the health and safety of attendees, volunteers, performers, vendors, sponsors, and the community had to come first.

Wildfire smoke continues to blanket much of Michigan, creating unhealthy air quality conditions that are expected to persist through this evening. Health officials recommend limiting outdoor activities, especially for children, older adults, and anyone with asthma or other respiratory conditions.

While it's disappointing to lose one of the summer's signature downtown events, organizers say they appreciate everyone's understanding and support during these unusual conditions.

The good news? Friday Night Live is expected to return next week with the "Fiesta on the River" celebration, bringing live music, entertainment, and plenty of summer fun back to downtown Saginaw, weather and air quality permitting.

President Donald Trump delivered a primetime address Thursday night, once again disputing the results of the 2020 presidential election while calling for stricter voting laws ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

During the speech, Trump promoted a voter ID proposal currently before Congress. The legislation has not advanced due to a lack of sufficient support.

Tensions Continue Between the U.S. and Iran

Fighting continues to escalate in the Middle East.

Iran launched new strikes targeting U.S. facilities in the region, including what reports describe as the first direct attack in Syria following six consecutive nights of U.S. strikes on Iranian military sites.

The ongoing conflict has significantly disrupted shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy shipping routes.

CDC Investigating Taco Bell Outbreak

Sally is a full-sized humanoid robot with silicone skin, long brown hair, facial expressions, and enough upper-body movement to make you wonder if she's about to assign homework... or launch the next robot uprising.

U.S. Launches New Strikes Against Iran

The United States launched a new wave of military strikes against Iran on Wednesday. According to the U.S. military, the attacks targeted Iranian military capabilities believed to threaten ships traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's busiest oil shipping routes.

Iran responded by saying it struck U.S. military targets in the region as renewed fighting continues despite an earlier agreement aimed at ending the conflict.

Statewide Air Quality Alert for Michigan

A statewide Air Quality Alert remains in effect as smoke from more than 100 Canadian wildfires continues to drift into Michigan.

The smoke contains fine particle pollution that can lead to coughing, shortness of breath, dizziness and fatigue. It can also worsen asthma and other chronic respiratory conditions.

Health experts recommend limiting time outdoors whenever possible. If you must be outside for an extended period, wearing a properly fitted N95 mask can help reduce exposure.

DNR Approves Permit for Great Lakes Tunnel Project

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has issued a permit for Enbridge Energy's proposed Great Lakes Tunnel Project.

The project would replace the existing Line 5 dual pipelines that currently rest on the lakebed beneath the Straits of Mackinac.

State officials say the permit includes environmental protections designed to minimize impacts on rare plants, wildlife and sensitive habitats.

The Detroit Red Wings are making a major change in the front office.

Remember when updating your status was basically a daily ritual?

You’d share what you were eating, where you were going, a funny thought, or just let everyone know you were “having a great day.” But these days, it seems like posting on social media has become less about fun and more like another chore on the to-do list.

A new survey from a privacy company found that 55% of Americans say maintaining their social media presence now feels more like work than entertainment.

More than half of people say they’re posting less than they were five years ago, and many are becoming much more selective about what they put online.

So why are people stepping back?

The biggest reasons include:

•  Political arguments and online debates

• Endless doomscrolling

• Growing concerns about privacy

The survey also found younger adults are feeling the pressure the most, with Gen Z more likely than other generations to say social media has become exhausting.

Maybe the days of posting every meal, every vacation, and every random thought are fading away.

Perhaps the next big status update should simply say:

“Gone outside… be back, maybe never.” 

It’s National Mac & Cheese Day, which means there’s no need to overthink dinner tonight. If you’ve got kids, this is an easy win. If you don’t have kids… even better. There’s absolutely no shame in making yourself a big bowl of cheesy comfort food. After all, who doesn’t love mac and cheese?

But if you’re someone who likes to take things to the next level, a series of social media surveys recently set out to answer one important question:

What makes the PERFECT macaroni and cheese?

Thousands of opinions came in, and the results reveal some pretty strong mac and cheese preferences.

 The Best Noodle Choice

When it comes to pasta shape, spirals were the clear winner, taking 55% of the vote.

Classic curved and bent tubes came in second with 22%, while shells grabbed 15%.

The lesson? People want noodles that know how to hold onto that cheesy goodness.

 The Ultimate Cheese

No surprise here: cheddar took the top spot, earning 40% of the vote.

The runner-up was a softer, smoother melting cheese category, including favorites like Monterey Jack, Havarti, Muenster, and Gouda, with 20%.

 The Perfect Seasonings

Plain cheese is great, but many people believe the right spices can take mac and cheese to another level.

The most popular additions included:

• Pepper

• Dry mustard

• Paprika

• Salt

• Dijon mustard

• Garlic powder

• Onion powder

One surprise? Cayenne pepper didn’t make the list, even though a little heat can add a nice kick.

Some adventurous cooks suggested adding ingredients like chicken stock, Worcestershire sauce, curry, or even pesto.

 Should There Be Meat?

For most people, the answer was simple:

No meat. Keep it classic.

About two-thirds voted to keep their mac and cheese vegetarian.

For those who wanted to add something extra, pork ranked highest, likely thanks to the popularity of bacon. Chicken came in second.

 What About Vegetables?

Again, the majority said:

No vegetables needed.

But if you want to sneak something green into the bowl, broccoli was the most popular choice, followed by onions.

 The Perfect Cheese Sauce

When it comes to sauce consistency, people want balance.

The most popular answer was:

“Plenty, but not crazy.”

“Just a little extra” came in next, while a small group admitted they love their mac and cheese extremely dry, describing it as being “drier than the Sahara.”

A certain school cafeteria style may have been hiding in that 1%.

 The Dairy Debate

The favorite dairy addition was:

 Whole milk

Cream came in second, followed by evaporated milk.

 Oven or Stovetop?

This one was close, but the oven won the battle.

Oven-baked mac and cheese beat stovetop 58% to 42%.

The crispy top layer may have been the deciding factor.

Michigan Flags Lowered to Half-Staff

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags at the State Capitol Complex and on all public buildings throughout the state to be flown at half-staff in honor of Lindsey Graham, who passed away Saturday at the age of 71.

According to the Governor's Office, flags will remain at half-staff until 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 18.

Health Officials Investigating Cyclosporiasis Outbreak

Michigan health officials are continuing to investigate a growing outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a foodborne illness caused by a microscopic parasite.

Early findings suggest that lettuce or other leafy salad greens may be the source of the outbreak, although investigators have not identified a specific type of produce, grower, or supplier. Officials also say other food items have not been ruled out.

More than 2,600 cases have been reported in Michigan since June 22, making it one of the state's largest recent foodborne illness investigations.

Health officials encourage anyone experiencing prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, or fatigue to contact their healthcare provider.

American Red Cross Declares Emergency Blood Shortage

The American Red Cross is asking donors to roll up their sleeves after blood supplies dropped by 25 percent nationwide, including in Michigan.

The organization has declared its first summer emergency blood shortage since 2024 and says hospitals depend on a steady supply of donations to support surgeries, cancer treatments, trauma patients, and emergency care.

A visit to Yellowstone National Park turned into a terrifying encounter when a massive bull bison charged a grandfather visiting with his grandson, sending him flying through the air in a viral video that has been making the rounds online.

The incident happened Friday at Yellowstone, where the grandfather and his grandson were visiting the park and taking in the incredible wildlife. Video captured by a nearby photographer shows the bison charging toward the man as he tries to get away by running around a group of trees.

Unfortunately, the bison caught up with him, hooked him with its horns, and tossed him into the air. The man flew several feet before hitting the ground hard.

Thankfully, he is expected to make a full recovery, although he suffered a broken leg and needed surgery.

 The Bison Was Not Provoked, Witness Says

While some wildlife encounters happen because visitors get too close or ignore safety warnings, this situation appears to be different.

Photographer Mike Macleod, who captured the incident, said the bison had wandered into a campsite and initially focused its attention on a group of young boys near a tent. The kids were reportedly taking photos from a distance of about 50 to 100 feet away.

The boys quickly scattered, but shortly afterward, the bison noticed the grandfather and his grandson. The pair had stopped to take photos of the animal from afar when the bison suddenly charged.

The grandson was able to run away, but the grandfather was chased down and thrown into the air.

Witnesses stepped in, helped move the bison away, created a safety perimeter, and called 911.

 A Wild Landing Gets a Funny Review

Macleod rushed over to help and tried to lighten the moment by joking with the injured man.

As a former U.S. Army paratrooper, Macleod told him he would give his landing a “9.5 out of 10.”

The grandfather reportedly replied:

“Well, if you just caught me five years ago, I coulda done better.”

Despite the scary moment, the man’s sense of humor remained intact.

 Yellowstone Reminder: Wildlife Is Still Wild

The National Park Service is investigating the incident, but early reports indicate this was not a case of visitors intentionally provoking the animal.

Park officials regularly remind visitors that even when you are following the rules, wild animals can be unpredictable. Bison may look calm while grazing, but they are powerful animals capable of moving quickly and reacting suddenly.

The National Park Service recommends staying at least 25 yards away from large animals like bison, elk, and deer, and 100 yards away from predators like bears and wolves.

A beautiful wildlife photo is worth remembering, but it is never worth becoming part of the wildlife story.

Tittabawassee Road Construction Begins

Officials say the United States has been carrying out limited strikes followed by pauses in an effort to avoid further escalation while diplomatic negotiations continue behind the scenes.

Cyclosporiasis Cases Continue to Rise Across Michigan

Health officials are reporting another significant increase in cyclosporiasis cases across Michigan.

According to the Michigan Department of Health, the statewide total has climbed to 1,251 cases since June 22, up from 992 cases reported just a day earlier. So far, 44 people have been hospitalized.

Locally, Saginaw County has reported 13 cases, while Midland County has confirmed two.

State health officials continue to encourage residents to thoroughly wash fresh fruits and vegetables before eating them as investigators work to determine the source of the outbreak.

Bridge Cleaning Begins Next Week in Saginaw

Drivers in Saginaw should expect brief traffic disruptions beginning Monday.

City crews will begin their annual bridge cleaning and maintenance project, closing one bridge each day while work is completed.

The schedule starts with the Johnson Street Bridge and will gradually move south before wrapping up at the Center Street Bridge on Friday, July 17.

Each day's work is expected to be completed by 4 p.m., with bridges reopening after crews finish.
